Foreword by Shepherdess from Arteffect 14:

Excerpt from Arteffect 14 by Clay Army: Two By Two We All Clamor For Life

Two By Two, We All Clamor For Life

“Happiness runs in a circular motion, thought is like a little boat upon the sea.
Everybody is a part of everything, anyway.
You can have everything if you let yourself be.”
- Donovan

Large rock concert gatherings have been “happening” since about forever, it’s just that the singers have changed, that’s all. Long live everything, long live rock. The terra cotta soldiers were the original fans of rock, and the show marches on. Kings and queens will be in force, Cao Yu and Cui Jin will speak to their generations and say, here’s the prayer, say it loud, say it proud. And amen, hallelujah, Long Shen Dao punctuates with extra jah.

We stand in unison, individuals en masse, grains like sand, sand like dots, gritty and nifty, soaking up sun and water – sing it with me, higher on the mountain, standing on the shoulders of Sisyphus, straining so hard not to be the son Glaucus. Give us horses, let us ride, cure us of those who keep us restrained, who saw the grass mud horse in the bushes of Taipingjiao? Aunty Freaky, what have you been drinking? The kool aid here is clean.

The mortal man behind the curtain, or maybe just a wizard, we can’t be sure if the music doesn’t kill the myth of silence. XTX kicks back and wails like the yeti, and someone says the Pet Conspiracy has spoken to the mob and heard what they said, they said the mob rules. Black as night, knights of might, rabbits drinking blood from the necks of those who don’t know the pass words. Happy girls rule the world, the vise around the crown.

Seeking ale in the fragilistic grail, we want to know when enough’s enough and danger calls us back from the tipping time of no return to ashes, rising from the bonfire on the beach. Yuguo sears with darkest flame, London burns while they play, leather suits and birthday boots, it’s all a stolen glance. The Ghost Spardac flits by the candle and leaves a shadow on the wall of the cave, if they couldn’t know, they wouldn’t know. It’s only for the living who flail to flee the flood. Climb aboard, first and second mates.

Speaking in tongues of further lands, Toy Captain sings of distant times. The savage beast is soothed by mellow dromes and magic tones, the mind wanders to when things will be the surface with deep currents asunder, surf’s up for serfs, us. When pop up bubbles are popped, when monsters within dissolve like mushrooms in the rain, heavy rain, gotta be heavy man. Shin gets popped, for they sell, like, a million records man. And a million popsicles. It’s all about the rapper man, the pretty bells and telephone rings, the maker of kings.

The royalty of truth, the mole from the ministry, listen closely to Pipedream Princess, holding a shell up to a shell, hearing an echo of an echo, we’re lost in the loop and though it’s all an empty shell, but sounds ok to me, just let me go, relax in the undertow. The dollops and reams of cream, there’s bags of milk and beer to boot, when head becomes toe, when boat becomes row, when fish become roe, and people progress to an imaginative state where it all could happen instead of having happened.

Perdel, running from something, headlong, headstrong, family planning never planned on this. Single kids, nothing depends on the one who is independent, connected to the grid by a loose wire stretched across a neck. Sissy Chao shows the disapproval for approval, nothing overrated likes being underrated, nothing underground is above us, you can’t get coconuts from a banana tree, but music makes you dance, music makes you dance, music makes you dance.

DJs make music sway to the beat, swing in the heat, undress and undulate, one and all, sand in the cracks. Bands will stick together, people come and go. Things will happen, it’s been that way since about forever. It’s just the names have changed, that’s all. Let there be a festivus for the rest of us, two by two, we all clamor for life.

Out on the Street, You’ll Pay It Back Later

My colleague told me that university students nowadays are not keen on part-time work, and they don’t care about cultural quality either, with maybe Super Girl and Pretty Boy being the exception. This makes me think of the Beat generation in the West. Their story does not repeat itself in our young generation. Actually, the Beat generation has never collapsed. They were just tired of the cold war, the white terror, and tired of the world created by adults. So they used a lot of differnent ways to explore, to strive, and to change, and as a result a new world order, a peaceful era came. How about us? Maybe one day you will realize that the real dreariness is that one doesn’t even have the ability to collapse.

Real universities appeared in this country a little over a hundred years ago, but the initial glory previously reached makes today’s luxurious campuses look pale. Cai Yuanpei, Fu Sinian, Jiang Menglin, Zhu Kezhen, and Yang Zhensheng all contributed to the prosperity and academic atmosphere of Qingdao, but the footprints they left for university education have been wiped away by the stink of money. History does not make progress from here. Who can still remember the principle of academic freedom, teaching freedom, and study freedom? Where are the values and norms of today’s universities?

In the past, directives from the Ministry of Education to Peking University could be returned unopened. Nowadays who remembers the independence and dignity that universities should have? The university has never been a cradle of tool making, but now we may not even be able to make tools. Therefore, the first thing to collapse is not the children but the school that strangled their mind. We need to pursue truth, we need to be insistent, we need to love our country and love other people. We need all these things now even more than at any other time, but did we learn these from school?

Passing through Yushan Road, I was looking for some trace of the principal Yang Zhensheng but found instead that his name and reputation are not remembered today. Our city’s history is very short, but we have forgotten so much. The Guangzhou restaurant is still there, but the Drunken Eight Immortals have disappeared. Without Principal Yang, what good are the so-called former residences of notables? Without Principal Yang, how can we talk about cultural beginnings? The cultural celebrities at that time could not imagine that more than seventy years later the restaurants in this city are much more luxurious, but the culture can never return to its boom time. The winding and quiet paths in Xiao Yu Shan were the only paths to be passed by the master of Chinese culture Liang Shiqiu as he borrowed and returned books to Song Chunfang. How many men of literature passed along these paths at that time? If you stroll through there, you will find that it is quite a long road.

Waves of so-called outstanding students have lost the basic ability to live their lives in schools, and lost all that universities should give them. How could they have any other choice? They can only find comfort from material things and satisfaction from fortune and money, thereby to improve their station in life from the accompanying “status”. They never care about others, just as they are never concerned about the truth. When these so-called elites become the future of this country, do we really need to sigh about the fickleness of the world, to feel strange about human hearts not being what they were in the old days, and to feel surprise why there is still so much fatuousness and numbness?

If even our children in the ivory towers are like this, how about those who drift on the street after middle school? In order to let them walk on the right path and not indulge in Internet addiction, the government dispenses electric shock therapy, which is looked upon by those children with bitter smiles. Why do our descendants need to face to all these things? Five murder cases in kindergartens and schools thrill us. Experts and scholars have various opinions, but no one recognizes that the murderers are all from a vulnerable group. Why does one vulnerable group would hurt another more vulnerable group? I remember the Beijing child who went to attack a mighty group.

Yang Jia once gave such a explanation of criminal motivation: “Regarding humiliation, if it needs to be carried a whole lifetime, I would rather break the law. You need to give me an explanation for anything, and if you cannot give me an explanation, I will give you one.” China is developing, and the GDP is always maintained. Regardless of whether it is right or wrong, we are resplendent for sixty years, but how about the price? How will people in the future look at the price we’ve paid today?

Out on the street, you’ll pay it back later.

Check out the foreword from Arteffect 10 (English and Chinese versions):

The Holy City, Qingdao

In ancient days, one standard to describe a real man was his distinct masculine features, by which numbers of women would adore him. In other words, even if Wu Song could kill a bunch of tigers his hero figure will be greatly discounted if he were impotent.

I don’t know why but in my memory from when I was little, though leaflets seldom appeared on telegraph poles, I can still remember what a junior middle school boy has kept in his memory for quite a long time.

“Lift but not hard; hard but not straight; straight but not long lasting; long lasting but without ejaculating; ejaculate without semen”. I don’t know the reason for some recent specialized hospitals to not use such a classical sentence to solicit business, but I certainly have no intention of discussing about how many men are there at present.

It is really hard to perceive that life is getting better. Porn movies are more prevalent, girls are more willing but it seems there are more men suffering from this kind of problem now than ever.

However, what I think about is our city, Qingdao. From the time when Germany confidently leased Qingdao under the banner of revenge for the murder of two missionaries killed by two Juye bandits, the Germans sent their elites to China, a place where they didn’t even have a screw to begin to build a colonial showcase aimed at spreading their own civilization. This city’s goal was a German flag in the Far East. Imagine that if Germany didn’t lose in the two wars, our city now must be like Hong Kong with a deeply embossed colonial legacy, with Mercedes-Benz and BMWs everywhere on our streets, and relatives and friends coming to see us to get a Qingdao passport. By present historical interpretation, a colony is way too scandalous. It is a symbol of shame, just like a girl looking for a lover would rather marry a robber than become the concubine of a scholar. The right of choice is inviolable. Here I also could never understand that although Commonwealth countries are obviously independent, why do they still join the federation and hang the Queen’s picture, rather than becoming enemies of the United Kingdom? Don’t they feel shame? Though our history seems very tough, it was actually not hard at all at the beginning. Similar to the many stars moving to Hong Kong these days, the laboring masses around the area also migrated at that time. Now we would be embarrassed to say that our first generation immigrants have a concubine complex. They left their homes and went to the German master in order to live a good life. We cannot ask all people to refuse the food from Europe because of moral integrity. History is written by victors, and women’s lives are for joy and freedom. The Germans are not as complex as the clever Chinese. Their strict working attitude turned this barren land into a small European town in only 20 years. The city even now is still enjoying the good reputation of red tiles and green trees. On the other hand, if we went to Germany to build a colony, I don’t know what would happen. Anyhow, I’ve been to the Chinatown there.

Good times didn’t last long. After the First World War, an announcement from the Japanese, who are more speculative than the Qingdao immigrants, seemed even more just and stern. In order to resist the invasion of the West and promote the Big East Asian co-prosperity, they sent Yamato Samurais to this place, and expelled the German invaders. We were forced to remarry in the report of guys. However, we also got a chance to experience the Meiji Restoration. Apparently we spurned the greed and selfishness of the Japanese, although we don’t have enough information to prove that a large amount of the population was lost during the war. At least there are many cotton mills in Cangkou, which is the evidence of the Japanese enslaving us. Thus, even if we can drive a Toyota or Nissan, we always say that they are not good to us, at least not as good as Germans. As we wished, the hard but not long lasting Japanese were evicted out of our country with the help of other foreign countries. The May Fourth movement during that period was a protest to leave this master. These settlers could formally begin to develop themselves as a host in the end. There’s nothing more exciting than listening to yourself. We started to build Universities, carry on development, and implement the Three Principles of the People. Shen Honglie, Yang Zhensheng, Liang Shiqiu, and Yu Dafu frequently visited this beautiful city. Qingdao at that time had a lot of vitality, and also a lot of celebrity anecdotes. Our city appearance really blossomed, and even Lao She wrote the famous “Rickshaw Boy” here. This young city almost became the only city on par with Shanghai in the Far East area. Of course, soon we ushered in the liberation of more freedom. It is said that the speed of the liberation in Qingdao was beyond imagination. We didn’t even change the flag of the national government three days after the People’s Liberation Army entered the city. We seemed too excited for the coming of our public servants, just like the historical progress of women’s Liberation that allowed them to be remarried.

The past 60 years is the longest period we have been under a single government. We have received a number of expensive tall buildings, the crowded development of the eastern areas, the real estate boom in Laoshan, the status of a city specifically designated in the state plan, festivals like the Qingdao Beer Festival, and a bunch of famous brand products, but what else? The incumbent Mayor gave us a new starting point called the urban spirit. No matter whether the four words of integrity, broad, harmony and excellent have actual significance, it also reflects that while the material civilization needs are met, people naturally begin to focus on the improvement of spirit. Superfluous desires always emerge after satisfaction of appetite. This city, which changed its master many times, declared that its goal is to become an international megacity, but never gave a specific time or specific content. What is internationalization and when can we achieve internationalization? Everyone who has visited Europe and even Hong Kong would have his own judgment. We have so many things, but our culture is still not in stream. Compared with economic figures, culture seems easier to be smeared and concealed, just like the Emperor’s new clothes. You give your woman famous brand clothes and LV bags, and thus expect this young girl you loved to become an international star. The wish is good, but it needs persistence and intelligence to come true.

Long lasting may not shoot; shoot but may not contain semen”

This city has a total of more than 100 years history, which seems not that long. However, every stage of it cannot carry on for some reason. This might be the answer to why we are so nondescript. History tells us not to repeat a mistake, but now there are not that many chances left for us to make mistakes. This is very much like the holy (surplus) female group nowadays. You must choose, but no one can tell you how to choose, because if they tell you, how would others choose. As a result, it has become more different to select a man than at any other time. The rich second generation is mindless; civil servants are boring; those good at making money disregard their families; family-centered men cannot make money; honest men risk becoming dishonest; dishonest men may not change afterwards. That’s not their fault. Who hasn’t lost? The time when I could not understand the leaflets, we had a booklet called ideological and moral education to serve as the criteria of our worldview. Today when I read them again, I can understand the leaflet but not the booklet. It is an age when Chinese men are facing group premature ejaculation, so the woman’s spirit can only be upgraded, and of course, only the holy (surplus) females like nuns remain. At this time we should consider learning from those leaflets, and cure this disease, though it may be contrary to the spirit of our urban rules, to please our females.

How about our city? Is there any medicine to save it? Will it become a holy (surplus) city?

With the great development of our motherland, we feel the spring of the year 2010 is coming, and look out from confused eyes. I have seen the majestic scene of the first dust storm, while enjoying the Canadian salty sweet ice wine, and recalled the words of a famous moderator, “Spring is definitely not something we can conjure at will”. So we imagine the romantic scene together with our lovers at the end of 2012, and say: whatever we do finally comes to its end.

We carefully read the great love stories long years ago, regardless of their identity, and we were still touched. Those are different things than the adultery of Xi Menqing & Pan Jinlian. Whether he was a sinner or not, he has the right to love, but also has been informed by the same values. As a matter of good policy, we begin to have the opportunity to see some of the things that tell us love is not so sure. Everybody has talked about the Norwegian Forest, Gatsby, all the stories that tell of people who were deceived by love. However, after entering the new century, our lovely girls never say that these stories are topsy-turvy, and they will laugh when they hear of love. I have to sigh when I think of what my idol Cui Jian said: It is not that I do not understand, it is just the changing of the world.

Our country is full of politics and it always adheres to the principles of the political center. As for the evil Google finally expelled from our country, the question is easy: Google is a political body or just being political? When I was carried away in the moment of love, I thought I had more sober sense: love of people is the true love, what is more loveable than our country? So I decided to continue to love.

A friend’s sister said the Shepherdess has so many complaints, and asked, “is she disappointed by love?” I felt so ashamed when I heard these words. When the guy that you love is talking about the love, you know that you do not have the feeling of love, so you definitely understand, love has no boundaries, and there is not necessarily the shore or a mirage when you look back.

Stupidity is innate, it is a common feature of vulnerable groups, as the member of SB. I just have to pray, what is good is not such as our country is good, we do not depend on the immortals and emperors, but we still believe in our great country. We love Zhao Benshan, Qiong Yao, Guo Jingming and Li Yuchun, all of these artists can withstand our tests. Not because of poverty, we just hold their performances. We are the members of the country, how can we complain?
So I think I have to sleep, I have no complaints, just peace of mind to sleep.

Check out the foreword by Shepherdess in Arteffect 8 (English version only):

There will be something unusual before and after each New Year’s day, the new year, how it begin? However, what’s the true meaning of the change? The book Dao De Jing, maybe Kongzi could not understand it, or why did he creative so many bullshit rules to control people’s life?

Our great country (maybe the government, people, republic of China) is a happy family, She always creates a variety of legends, Mr. Wu Zuguang is good at writing four words to the people which we call them born at the right time, we are grateful to God so that we could live in such a unique era, unprecedented, have you learned nothing from Zhao Benshan? He consistently scratches our collective conscious itch and makes everyone laugh loud and long, even leaves his apprentices to continue his article life, so stunning.

So when we have Zhao Benshan, also have Lu Xun, we have Yu Qiuyu, also have Yu Hua, we have Yu Dan, also have Ji Xianlin, we have Guo Jingming, also have Han Han, we have Li Yuchun, also have Cui Jian, we have Zhang Yimou, also have Jia Zhangke. Vulgarity with elegance, they are also in different roads in final, in the city, there are some guys who make fortune by culture, and also some guys like Quixote, it will mean nothing whatever whom they are, but put them into the history, we just could remember the latter one. Writing here, I find there have some tone of angry, our country does not lack anger, as a result there will be the title of mockery, the anger could not change insistence, even do not change the freedom, only we can make anger into strength when we are in the silience, because we do not have enemy throughout our life. It seems there is always some privacy behind a hero, just as collar and cuffs are the most dirty parts of the clothes.

It is very common of lots of things, but we must feel mighty when we know some guys insist on the same thing for a long time. Even if it is the lie, also it will be the miracle when it last so long time.

Has past 15 years from the beginning to do the performance, we know more with 15 years of vicissitudes changes, we use our own ways to solve the problem, we have been like a child to think fantasy, also in practice, whatever the outcome, we know that the children were always happy when they know nothing, so we refuse to grow up.

This spring performances will first on Mar.11, we promise 2010 will more exciting than 2009, Avatar’s ticket is more or less hundreds, and we believe that if you really love music, really understand it in heart, then each of our performance will be the world-class one, not to be missed, in a drinking nightlife, whichever one you do is better than coming and enjoy the concert?

No matter how drunk, finally you will wake up.
